Terraced Landscapes in Slovenia as Cultural Values

Inner Development la la-building orange
Summary

Slovenia has an extremely diverse landscape and is among the few places in Europe with cultivated terraces throughout the entire country. As a typical feature, they appear in all types of Slovenian landscapes but differ by scope, form, past and contemporary function, accessibility, and state of conservation.

Description

Terraced landscapes can be defined as a complex landscape system, in which natural geographical and social geographical subsystems are sensitively balanced. The condition of terraced landscapes is strongly affected by contemporary socioeconomic processes, such as globalization, and political and economic integration. This project systematically inventoried terraced areas across all of Slovenia; using geographic information systems made it possible to perform a complex geographical evaluation of typical terraced landscapes by Slovenian macroregions, mesoregions, and basic landscape types. In the process, the typology of terraced areas was improved and additionally evaluated by comparing it against previous inventories. This project will solve the issues of how to manage the risks that appear in many Slovenian terraced landscapes due to building cultivated terraces (intensive farming), their deterioration (landslides), and functional changes. Attention was also directed to the scale and diversity of terraced landscapes in Europe and elsewhere. Terraced landscapes have a unique experiential value, which becomes increasingly evident when this landscape is compared to other attractive landscapes in Slovenia and abroad.
