Renaturation of ecosystems at the interface between humans and the environment: An interdisciplinary science book by Stefan Zerbe
This interdisciplinary textbook by Stefan Zerbe deals with the different ecosystems in Central Europe. The book focuses on the renaturation of these ecosystems. In this book, Stefan Zerbe also points out the importance of peatlands also in relation to climate change. Although only 3% of the earth's surface is covered by peat, the peat layers of peat bog absorb about one third of the total terrestrial carbon and about twice the carbon stored in the forests of the world in their biomass.
This interdisciplinary science book, which bridges the gap between the natural and social sciences, comprehensively presents both the scientific principles of renaturation ecology and practical aspects of ecosystem renaturation. It highlights the diversity of land use types with a focus on Central Europe and presents case studies of practical renaturation projects. The textbook offers a profound and up-to-date, but also critical overview of the state of knowledge for students dealing with the environment, for scientists as well as for practitioners. This book opens up the broad spectrum of degraded ecosystems of Central European natural and cultural landscapes. The ecological foundations are expanded by an interdisciplinary perspective, considering environmental ethics, sociology, anthropology and economics. Chapter 8 (pp. 151-182) of this book deals with the peatlands of Central Europe. It focuses on various topics, including the ecology and typology of peatlands, ecosystem services, stages of degradation, regional, national and international peatland protection regulations, renaturation measures and protection through utilisation - integrative peatland protection. In addition, the case study "The Dosenmoor in Schleswig-Holstein" will be presented.
In diesem disziplinübergreifenden Fachbuch, welches die Brücke zwischen den Natur- und Sozialwissenschaften schlägt, werden sowohl die wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen der Renaturierungsökologie wie auch praktische Aspekte der Ökosystemrenaturierung umfassend dargestellt. Hierbei werden die Vielfalt der Landnutzungstypen mit einem Schwerpunkt auf Mitteleuropa herausgestellt und Fallbeispiele von praktischen Renaturierungsprojekten präsentiert. Das Fachbuch bietet sowohl für Studierende, die sich mit der Umwelt beschäftigen, für Wissenschaftler wie auch für Praktiker einen profunden und aktuellen, aber auch kritischen Überblick über den Stand des Wissens. Dieses Buch erschließt das breite Spektrum degradierter Ökosysteme der mitteleuropäischen Natur- und Kulturlandschaften. Die ökologischen Grundlagen werden durch eine interdisziplinäre Perspektive unter Berücksichtigung der Umweltethik, Soziologie, Anthropologie und Ökonomie erweitert. Kapitel 8 (S. 151-182) dieses Buches beschäftigt sich mit den Mooren in Mitteleuropa. Es geht auf verschiedene Schwerpunkte ein, dazu gehören u.a. Ökologie und Typisierung der Moore, Ökosystemleistungen, Degradationsstufen, regionale, nationale und internationale Moorschutzbestimmungen, Renaturierungsmaßnahmen und Schutz durch Nutzung – integrativer Moorschutz. Zudem wird das Fallbeispiel „das Dosenmoor in Schleswig-Holstein“ angeführt.
