The overarching goal of IG Moorschutz (engl.: peatland protection community of interest) is the protection and restoration of peatlands and their ecosystem services. The focus is on preserving the peat body – and thus water and nutrient budgets appropriate to the location. IG Moorschutz is an association of scientists that aims to give peatland protection in Austria a strong voice, to network actors in peatland protection and to share peatland knowledge.
The aim of IG Moorschutz (engl.: peatland protection community of interest) is to protect or restore peatlands and their ecosystem services. IG Moorschutz is an association of scientists to give peatland protection in Austria a strong voice, to network actors in peatland protection and to share peatland knowledge.
In all Austrian federal provinces there are regional experts who are available as contact persons for peatland protection issues. In order to be able to implement science-based peatland protection in the best possible way, renowned scientists from various disciplines form the scientific advisory board, which supports the local experts.
The members of IG Moorschutz provide advice, organise excursions and volunteer work, support peatland restoration, carry out awareness raising activities, organise exchange events and give talks/lectures. The broad target group of IG Moorschutz includes authorities, NGOs, companies and individuals.
This best practice example is also presented in the Austrian Peatland Strategy 2030+.
Das Ziel der IG Moorschutz ist der Schutz bzw. die Wiederherstellung von Mooren und deren Ökosystemdienstleistungen. Hierbei steht der Erhalt des Torfkörpers – und somit standortgerechte Wasser- und Nährstoffhaushalte – im Fokus. Die IG Moorschutz ist ein Zusammenschluss von Wissenschafter:innen um Moorschutz in Österreich eine starke Stimme zu geben, Akteur:innen im Moorschutz zu vernetzen und Wissen zu vermitteln.
In allen Bundesländern gibt es regionale Expert:innen, die als Ansprechperson bei Moorschutzfragen zur Verfügung stehen. Um wissenschaftsbasierten Moorschutz bestmöglich umsetzen zu können, bilden renommierte Wissenschaftler:innen verschiedener Fachbereiche den sogenannten wissenschaftlichen Beirat, der die lokalen Expert:innen unterstützt.
Die Mitglieder der IG Moorschutz beraten, organisieren Exkursionen und Freiwilligenarbeit, unterstützen Moorsanierungen, verrichten Öffentlichkeitsarbeit, organisieren Austauschveranstaltungen und halten Vorträge. Die breite Zielgruppe der IG Moorschutz inkludiert Behörden, NGOs, Firmen und auch Einzelpersonen.
