National Reporting Network

Water Management la la-tint blue
Summary

National reporting network consist of interested individuals, mostly farmers and technicians of agricultural and forestry background, who weekly report their observations on soil moisture and drought damage to vegetation or even loss of yield on their specific location. The observations are sent through an online questionnaire with few single-choice questions, while aggregated data per administrative units are then regularly shown in Drought Watch tool. Such  network of drought reporters provides valuable information on exact drought stress and negative impacts on the field in order to fully characterize current drought conditions.

Description

National reporting network (NRN) acts as a way of drought impact assessment carried out through regular observations, which helps to deliver early awareness of drought damage in place. NRN consists of engaged individuals on the field, mostly farmers and technicians with knowledge in agriculture and forestry, who weekly report their observations on the state of soil, vegetation or even loss of yield on their specific location, throughout the season or the year. The reporting process runs through an online questionnaire, available separately for agriculture, fruit-growing & viticulture, and forestry, with a few single-choice questions. Collected data on drought impacts are aggregated on administrative unit (NUT3) and then shown regularly in the Drought Watch tool through a 5-level intensity scale.

NRN validates and complements drought indices with information on drought impacts on the field, and this way help to fully characterize the current drought condition. At the same time, it greatly contributes to a systematic collection of data on the impacts of drought on the agricultural land, with its added value in regular collection of impact information data rather than post-drought assessment. Besides interested farmers, Slovenian NRN also has phonological observers, agricultural advisers and experts from meteorological services engaged in it, in order to assure its sustainability. Joining national reporting networks could also be a part of volunteering measures.

Poleg zainteresiranih kmetov so v slovensko mrežo poročevalcev vključeni še fenološki opazovalci, kmetijski svetovalci in zaposleni v meteorološki službi, kar omogoča mreži njeno trajnost.
